The head-on collision of two trains on Tuesday night, in Tempi, near the city of Larissa in central Greece resulted in at least 36 fatalities and numerous injuries. Rescue personnel are looking desperately for survivors.

Following a high-speed crash with a freight train just before midnight, the front carriages of a passenger train carrying more than 350 passengers were largely destroyed, according to the Greek Fire Service. In addition, 66 patients, including six in intensive care units, were being treated for their wounds in hospitals.

The majority of the accident’s passengers were young, the ICU director at a nearby hospital where those who sustained injuries are being treated said on Wednesday, according to state-owned public broadcaster ERT.

Before the catastrophic collision, the two trains involved had been riding on the same track for many miles. Reuters reports that the collision happened as the passenger train was coming out of a tunnel. On the scene, there were derailed carriages that were severely damaged, had smashed windows, and were spewing dense smoke.

When other derailed carriages tipped dangerously, one passenger carriage leaned on its side almost 90 degrees from the rest of the demolished train.

According to Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris, the identification of the victims has already started. “As you understand this is a terrifying process for parents and relatives who are here,” Plevris said from outside of the hospital in Larissa. We will help them as much as we can.” Although the identification process had “some problems,” he added that “those injured are in relatively good condition.”

Many were scurrying to get away from the collision’s debris. “There was panic … the fire was immediate, as we were turning over, we were being burned, fire was right and left,” 28-year-old Stergios Minenis told Reuters.

“We just heard a bang… the (train) car started spinning, before ending up sideways when we managed to exit,” another male passenger explained to ERT. A second passenger recalled the incident as “10 nightmarish seconds with fire” where nothing was visible due to the massive smoke.

The Greek Fire Service reported that recovery efforts are under way, with a particular emphasis on the first passenger train coaches, and that the dead toll is anticipated to climb.

Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece and known for its festivals and active cultural life, was where the passenger train was headed from the nation’s capital, Athens. The crash happened after a national celebration that took place over the weekend and finished with a holiday on Monday.

According to a 2022 report from the European Union Agency for Railways, Greece had the highest railway fatality rate per million train kilometers from 2018 to 2020 among 28 countries in Europe, which CNN noted as having a poor track record for passenger safety on trains compared to other European nations.
